Expat Warning Signs

Signs that adjustment isn’t going so well

The combined effect of differences, demanding workloads, relocation and family adjustments can lead to health and emotional problems including stress, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, isolation, relational difficulties, muscle tension and a low immune system.

The following symptoms may appear:

  • Extreme homesickness
  • Withdrawal from people who are different from you
  • A new and intense feeling of loyalty to your own culture
  • Compulsive eating or a loss of appetite
  • A need for excessive periods of sleep
  • Marital stress
  • Feeling sick much of the time
  • Irritability or fits of anger over minor inconveniences
  • Mood swings, which sometimes develop into depression
  • Compulsive eating/drinking and/or weight gain
  • Personal disorientation: A sense of loss is characteristic of culture shock. Culture shock has many different effects, time spans, and degrees of severity
  • Hostility towards host nationals: sometimes expatriates isolate themselves from the host country’s environment.
