Tips To Help Your Teen Through Exams

  1. Manage your own anxiety as much as you can.
  2. Assess whether your own expectations are contributing.
  3. Continue to reaffirm unconditional love.
  4. Encourage them to exercise regularly – maybe ask them to go for a walk with you.
  5. Instead of asking “What’s wrong?” if your child is moody or angry, try and ask: “Are you feeling stressed?”
  6. Challenge and reframe their negative thoughts.
  7. Ensure adequate sleep.
  8. A healthy diet is obviously important (no caffeine/reduce sugar).
  9. Try not to say: “Just do your best”, which can be perceived by your child as dismissive.
  10. Don’t take over – even if well meaning (e.g. planning their study timetable).
  11. Keep to the family routine as much as possible.
  12. Giving advice may be perceived as criticism.
  13. Be home as much as possible when they are on study break.
  14. Before their exam be reassuring and positive/ let them know that failing isn’t the end of the world.
  15. Get professional help if necessary.
